Sexual Harassment On The Counseling Profession, And Why It...

Abstract This paper will examine sexual misconduct in the counseling profession, and why it is not only unethical, but also illegal in half of the US states. Through exploring the harmful effects of a counselor’s sexual misconduct with a client, an enhanced perception will reveal reasons why a sexual relationship between counselor and client is unethical and illegal in 25 states. This paper will also look at the characteristics of the counselor/client’s sexual relationship, as well as the consequences of that relationship, and strategies to prevent it. Sexual Misconduct is defined as engaging in sexual and/or romantic counselor-client interaction or relationships with current clients, their romantic partners, or family members. (ACA Code A.5a). This includes erotic touch, (directly or through clothing), sexual suggestions (verbal and non-verbal), and conveying sexual fantasies. The American Counseling Association prohibits counselors from engaging in any sexual and/or romanti c relationship with current clients, their romantic partners, or their family members, as well as previous clients seen within the last 5 years. This prohibition includes electronic interactions, as well as face to face sexual/romantic interactions. All major counseling associations prohibit sexual misconduct in counselor-client interactions, not only because it is harmful to the client, but also to the counseling profession as a whole.
